Artwork In Detail
His new series ‘The Sky Garden’ highlights the irony of landscape gardening practices in China. He notes that the outskirts of every Chinese city has its own seedling base, designed to meet the great demand for trees to produce ’natural’-looking urban environments. Living on the outskirts of Chengdu, Zhang often saw workers in mobile cranes lifting exotic trees and rocks from all over the world and planting them in newly built parks, streets and neighbourhoods.

EnquireZhang Kechun won the Discovery Award at Les Rencontres d’Arles for The Yellow River in 2014. He won the National Geographic Picks Global Photo Contest in 1998 and was shortlisted at the World Photography Awards in 2013. Kechun’s work has been exhibited at Photoquai, Paris; the Beijing Photo Biennale and the Delhi Photo Festival, India. His latest series, ‘Sky Garden’ was awarded first place in the Still Life category of the 2023 Sony World Photography Award.
