Michael Kenna, ‘Forest Edge’
Celebrated as one of the world’s most prominent landscape photographers, Michael Kenna is known for his distinguishable black-and-white images of locations around the globe. Like many of Kenna’s most sought after works, ‘Forest Edge’ has almost sold out. Now only available as an artist proof (AP 3/3), we are delighted to offer the very last print that remains of this photograph.
Taken in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island, Kenna photographed a line of trees at the boundary of a forest, framed against an open sky and vast, snowy terrain. Stripped bare in winter, the fragility of the first tree appears to gather momentum as the forest tumbles into a dense, anonymous mass. The image holds a serene yet haunting atmosphere, which Kenna achieved by softening the light with his signature long exposure.
‘Forest Edge’ reflects Kenna’s deep affinity for Japanese landscapes, which often serve as meditative subjects in his work. The photograph invites the viewer to reflect on the quiet power of nature and the passage of time, exemplifying his ability to transform ordinary landscapes into sublime, contemplative spaces.
