Zhang Kechun Wins First Place at Sony Awards

SOL LDN are delighted to announce that Zhang Kechun has been awarded with First place in the Still Life category of this years Sony World Photography Award.

His new series ‘The Sky Garden’ highlights the irony of landscape gardening practices in China. He notes that the outskirts of every Chinese city has its own seedling base, designed to meet the great demand for trees and rocks within each city’s urban construction. Living on the outskirts of Chengdu, Zhang often saw workers in mobile cranes lifting exotic trees and rocks from all over the world and planting them in newly built parks, streets and neighbourhoods. Zhang presents singular trees against stark white backgrounds, removing the viewer from any context just as the trees have been removed from their natural habitats.
