Zhang Kechun’s photographs explore urbanisation, industrialisation and social change in modern China. His vistas are underscored by a subtle duality that considers the persistence of long-held national conventions within the shifting landscape of the present day. We witness this dualism through the muted tones of a neutral palette, emphasising the sublime grandeur of the national landscape while highlighting the absurdity in its contemporary additions.
In the style of much traditional Chinese art, Zhang depicts the people in his photographs as dwarfed by vast natural forms, or conversely, by a series of towering modern structures. He invites the viewer to contemplate the ways in which humanity and the natural world shape one another. No matter the series, Zhang’s work reliably places human inhabitants as minimal agents in a much grander struggle between larger forces.
